Nature of the Program
The financial sector in Nepal in recent years has grown rapidly with large number of banks, insurance companies and financial cooperatives. Nepal has become a member of World Trade Organization (WTO) and as per its requirements; the doors for establishing international financial institutions (banks, insurance companies etc) in this country will be opened in 2010 AD. This perspective of growth in this sector is projected to require a large number of skilled and professional manpower for these institutions.
Kathmandu University in tune with its well-establish policy of giving permission to start only need-based academic programs allowed National College for conducting yet another professional academic program tailored for financial sector. This four-year, eight-semester Bachelor in Development Finance (BDFin) was started in August 2006 with an intake of 30 students. Now, the number of seats in this program is 40. This program has been shaped in an interdisciplinary frame incorporating concepts and skills from economics, development, finance, banking, insurance, cooperatives, marketing, management etc. After the completion of this program, the graduates will be competent to be absorbed in financial institutions as skilled, efficient and professional manpower.

As there is an acute dearth of well-qualified human resource to run financial sectors of the country, graduates of BDFin have ample opportunities to be a part of financial, insurance, banking and cooperative sectors. Moreover, there is high demand of this type of manpower in abroad too. Those, who would like to receive future education, there are immense opportunities for them to avail.
Teaching Methodology
Basic methodologies adopted for teaching and learning are as mentioned below.
  • Lecture methods with adequate use of audio visual aids such as OHPs, LCDs etc.
  • Classroom discussion on key issues of development
  • Terms papers, assignments and case presentations in different subjects
  • Field studies for understanding wider perspectives of rural and urban areas
  • Seminars and talk programs for expanding the horizon of knowledge
  • Training and research works relating to the development
For effectively using this teaching methodology, the college uses the services of qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty members, who come from both academia and different governmental and international organizations. Constant seminars, dialogue and interaction with key resource persons from respective areas could help students develop deeper understanding and prepare them to face future challenges in the areas of development. Field visits in many areas are indispensable parts of the teaching. Realizing the necessity of field for on-the-spot study to materializing the theoretical knowledge, students are taken to many rural areas in different parts of Nepal in each semester.
Admission Procedure
  • Second division or minimum of 45% marks (in aggregate) secured at higher secondary or equivalent levels in any stream
  • Entrance test for preparing list of eligible candidates
  • Interview and group discussion for final selection
  • At the interview and group discussion, presence of parents or guardians will be must

Scholarships
To encourage meritorious students, the college offers partial scholarship annually to each study program. One student will be offered full scholarship nominated by Kathmandu University. College also provides topper Scholarship to students getting Highest marks in each year. Apart from these, the college tries to arrange financial support for its students through various NGOs, INGOs for conducting research. College also provides topper scholarship to students getting highest marks in each semester.
