National College:
Bridgestone for Development
in Nepal
-Rishikesh Wagle (Faculty of
English)
National College, Center for
Development Studies,
Baluwatar, Kathmandu in
collaborative affiliation
with Kathmandu University
has been offering courses on
Development Studies and
Development Finance for the
last decade. The slogan,
“Development Starts with Us”
is becoming more and more
popular in Nepalese
academia. It has
tremendously attempted to
facilitate the nation for
mitigating development
challenges. National College
has been acting a pivotal
role for development by
providing the correct
epistemology in order to
uplift the Nepalese
Scio-economic development.
Development has become the
major challenge for
developing nations like
Nepal, and equally, these
nations are direly in need
of skilled and professional
human resources to lead the
nation into the path of
progress and prosperity.
Development is a multi
dimensional phenomenon. For
holistic development and
development in a sustainable
way the underlying concept
and meaning of development
has to be understood in
relation with other
variables like economics,
socio- anthropology,
environment and political
system.
Nepal
as a developing country
still has many challenges to
come up against with. The
country needs a complete
academic package that
addresses all these, yet
unsolved issues of
development. The very
concept of “Nepal in
Diversity” has become one of
the major privileges for
development workers. For
this mission to get
accomplished, what we
require is to revamp the
primitive beauriocratic
system, and at the same
time, to use all available
natural resources in a
sustainable way. But, the
pertinent questions are- who
is responsible for such an
initiation? What could make
free Nepal from its
developmental dilemma? Who
is capable of doing so? How
such capable human resources
can be produced?
One of
the important outlets for
the problems raised here
rests heavily on the
academics. An academic
package that incorporates
broad knowledge and skills
of development has become
very essential to take Nepal
on the road to development.
Universities and colleges in
this country should
prescribe such academic
programs and offer students
the curriculum so that
everybody will lead towards
nation building.
Bachelor in Development
Studies (BDevS) is a
demand-driven and
result-oriented academic
program. It relies on its
holistic and sustainable
discourse. The curriculum is
responsive to dynamism of
development, in which the
concepts and theories of
development in the light of
global and comparative
perspectives have been
incorporated. Its focus on
development along with field
based practicum backed up
with leadership skills,
trainings, project works and
research is really
wonderful.
Similarly, Bachelor in
Development Finance (BDFin)
is another academic package,
which is responsive to
dynamism of Finance and
Development. The course is
interdisciplinary in nature
and has subjects like
finance, economics,
management, development and
project analysis etc. It
aims at strengthening one’s
ability to work in the
financial sectors,
transforming from primitive
approach to diverse
socio-economic condition
both in rural and urban
areas.
Nepal
can really turn into a very
fertile land, if we take the
right approach for
development. Unless and
until these developmental
and financial issues are
addressed, overall
development becomes very
distant phenomenon. National
College for, Centre for
Development Studies indeed
is praiseworthy to be
applauded and could turn out
to be the milestone in the
development of Nepal. |
