Introduction
National College, Center for Development Studies, was established in 1996 by a group of experienced and dedicated academicians for providing quality and need based education in a highly congenial academic environment. The broad objective of the college is to prepare and mould students capable of catering to the future manpower needs of the country.
Right from the inception, National College has been striving for academic excellence towards overall personality development of students. With the growing needs for competent professionals in the country, Center for Development Studies (CeDS) has been offering need based academic programs : Bachelor in Development Studies (BDevS) and Bachelor in Development Finance (BDFin) of Kathmandu University (KU). Besides these, CeDS has separate Research and Development wings for conducting research and training activities. The motto of the CeDS is to inculcate knowledge to the students through holistic approach of teaching, training and research.

Teaching Approach
National College gives special attention to rigorous teaching, training and research for producing competent mid-level practitioners and students interested in higher studies. The program focuses on
- Theoretical interactions along with concerned development processes and practices. Contemporary issues and concerns are discussed on global and comparative perspective.
- Regular seminars, dialogues and interactions with key resource persons from respective areas help students develop deeper understanding and prepare them to face future challenges in the areas of development.
- Field visits in many areas are indispensable parts of teaching.
- Realizing the necessity of field for on-the-spot study to materializing the theoretical knowledge, students are taken to many rural areas in different parts of Nepal in each semester.
Research Development and Training
Center for Development Studies (CeDS), is established as an integral part of National College, and has placed lots of effort for undertaking regular research and training activities for needy students. Research and Development wing under CeDS has been offering professional training packages for mid and senior level development planners and practitioners in and outside the college. Research and training programs are conducted, monitored and evaluated by a Research Committee within the CeDS.
CeDS has been started publishing “Development Journal” including the research articles of students, faculty and development professionals.
National College is conducting Derivative trainings (Basic and Advance) in collaboration with Mercantile Exchange Nepal (MEX Nepal) since 2009.
Basic Methodology Adopted for Teaching and Learning
- Lecture methods with adequate use of visual aids (LCD, overhead projector, slide projector, television etc.)
- Classroom workshops on emerging issues/subjects
- Term papers, research assignments, reviews and case studies relevant to the subjects taught
- Seminars, talk programs, field surveys, field studies and report preparations
- Field trip and practical observation in various communities, project sites, banking and financial institutions and industries as per the requirements
- High level seminars conducted by eminent and experienced resource persons or related subjects
- Exposure to proposal and report writing, research methodology and thesis preparation
Track Records
The college has achieved 100% pass record at all its final passing out examinations.
- BDevS results have been excellent not only in pass percentage, but also in scoring CGPA above 3.0.
- Seven batches of the students have already graduated from this college and are engaged either in development organizations or enrolled in Master level programs within and outside the country and the college is proud of their outstanding performances wherever they are working and studying.
- Seven of our students have received Nepal Bidya Bhushan medal.
On the basis of best-adjudged research proposals, many of our students have received research grant from various institutions and individuals. Some key grant donors are WWF, MOPST, WTLCP, MOLT, MEDEP, SACEP and Heifer International, Himalaya Shamsher J B Rana, Prof. Mahendra Narayan Mishra etc. Recently, CeDS has developed a policy of internship program with various institutions having prolonged experience in development sectors. In this context, Kaushila Foundation for Peace and Innovative Initiatives and Center for Micro Finance (CMF), READ NEPAL have been offering internship opportunities to students of National College.
